It really is hard to say how many times have had to adjust my conversation style or natural communication tendencies. For example, one of those tendencies, like most people, is to fill quiet breaks in chatter with my own rambling and all too often nonsensical words to cut what I used to feel was a painfully uncomfortable abyss of silence.
I have had many reasons to learn the art of staying silent. For one, most of the time closing my big flap is necessary to signal that I am listening and really care what the other party has to say. I mean, just good manners right? Second, in my line of work, questioning people to dive deeper into something that happened or to express reasoning behind an action this closing of the mouth is a skill that drives the other party to say more. The tables turned, forcing a killing of their own silent abyss.
And I would say my journey into the life of a Podcaster has helped me to stretch and adapt into new conversation skills, to improve skills already seemingly mastered and to throw out some bad habits. I can’t think of a better way to close out the season with a conversation with a fabulous fellow Podcaster about the specific conversation skills and techniques that are required to be an “interviewer” on a show.
While it is true that podcasting has a whole style of communication all to itself that doesn’t mean that these skills can’t apply to you. In fact, the best part is that all of the tips and tricks that we are diving into today are so very applicable to everyday life! Literally every man, woman and child can take these skills, apply them and cultivate better, more genuine convos. Building better relationships as a result.
